Enter
the new boating season with a truly useful talent. Learn
from Crowley’s own Phil Pollard how to make professional
looking eye splices and end splices so you can make
your own custom fitted dock lines.
A
sailor since the age of sixteen, Phil soon got involved
in sailboat racing in the Detroit area. Detroit’s
loss was Chicago’s gain as he came to the University
of Chicago in 1988 and met and married a gal with a
small photography business.

After
college he worked for a law firm for a couple years, but in
1988 realized his true calling was in his interim job at a
rapidly growing boatyard on the near southwest side where
he started as a boat handler/equipment operator. After a tenure
in the paint & fiberglass department, he moved on to run
the Ship’s Store, where he handled all of the bench
rigging and splicing.
Between
Chicago and Detroit, Phil reckons he has participated in at
least twelve Mackinac races. Join other old sea dogs to learn
some new tricks from this multifaceted marine master as he
presents a hands-on demonstration in which participants will
learn to perform both a single and a double braid splice.
All materials will be provided for this fun and useful seminar!
