Mel Surdel, A-1 Marine Surveying

Mel Surdel, CEO of A-1 Marine Surveying is a 36 year US Navy veteran and retired captain of the MOTU-2, the mobile training unit comprising military and civilian personnel which provide technical services and assistance to all naval forces.

He has served aboard US submarines, and once designed, constructed and operated a research submarine. More recently he has functioned as a trainer of enlisted midshipmen and officers in ship handling and piloting, and as a sailing instructor and master for the National Security Agency.

Mel belongs to the Society of Military Engineers and is a twenty year member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers. Selected for fellowship in the American College of Forensic Examiners (Marine Engineering), Mr. Surdel currently serves as the US Naval Academy’s Information officer for Illinois and Indiana.

A-1 Marine Surveying has successfully completed over 1000 marine surveys on boats ranging from seventeen feet to the largest ocean going ships. Mel will describe the use of Thermal Imaging, today’s “hot” new technology, and its application in marine surveys.
