Thunderstorms: What You Should Know

presented by

Jim Johnson , Weather To Sail

Jim Johnson is a Consulting Meteorologist who specializes in Marine and Aviation Meteorology. As a retired International Captain for Delta Air Lines, he has spent much of his life in a three dimensional “weather aquarium” observing weather first hand from the ground to 40,000 feet. He has seen towering thunderstorms up close and personal, and spent thousands of hours in the upper troposphere where surface features that form tens of thousands of feet below are born.

He has written a book on hazardous weather; numerous magazine articles, and is a contributing author to World Book Encyclopedia. Jim has been a frequent guest on The Weather Channel, and worked with Tom Skilling on Chicago’s WGN-TV weather special When Lightning Strikes.

Jim’s unique viewpoint stems from the fact that he not only understands the weather, but has flown in it and sailed in it. Jim brings this rare perspective and vast experience, along with beautiful photography, to every program he teaches. Discover the hidden workings of a thunderstorm -- how it forms, grows and dies. Emphasis placed on visual hazard recognition from your vessel, weather judgment and decision making.
