Of
course you’ve planned for your family’s well
being in the event of an emergency. But what would happen
if something occurred while you were out on a cruise?
Which of your family (or friends) would be able to take
the helm to safely return your vessel to port? Does your
crew know how to use your VHF to seek assistance? How
about your EPIRB? Have you shown them where you stow your
PFDs or aerial flares? Would they know how to reef? Turn
into the wind? Recover you if you were to fall overboard?
Do they understand the basic rules of the waterway or
why navigation signals and markers have different colors?
George F. Prescott, Sr. comes to this year’s Yachtapalooza
to lead a seminar he calls Partner In Command: Teach Your
Crew to Handle Anything. |
Mr. Prescott
holds the grade of senior navigator in the Chicago Sail &
Power Squadron, of which he has been a member for twenty three
years. A retired Chicago public school teacher, he currently
holds the office of Chicago Squadron Education officer.
He is
one of those rarest of dichotomies: a nautical switch-hitter
(which is to say, a sailor and a powerboater). He and his
family berth a thirty eight foot Chris Craft in New Buffalo,
where he holds the office of Sail Commander at the yacht club.
